This is drastically different from Nee's case. This guy cooperated and was richly rewarded by a royal screwing. I would have been furious.

Nonetheless, I don't see announcing a guaranteed-to-be-an-unending-disaster free for all national lawsuit festival on cops as the solution here. Just change the law such that confiscating people's stuff indefinitely without any apparent recourse isn't so absurdly easy, and certainly not in such a protracted manner, especially in the instance of an infuriating cash grab such as this.

It's critically important to make the distinction between silly howling babies like Shawn Nee, and people like this who suffer real mistreatment and harm at the hands of the police.

I have zero sympathy for this guy and everyone like him who choose to fuck with the police and then mess their diapers when they get pushback. I cheer, laugh, and point when people who act this way quite predictably wind up on the losing end of cause and effect.

If he'd opted to shut the big, dumb, loud hole under his nose, backed off, and walked away instead of opting for his staccato smart ass confrontational comments, nothing would have happened here, but then again, if nothing happened here, there goes his shot at fucking the taxpayers out of a nice chunk of change, so why not at least take a shot and see if he hits the lottery? It's a brilliant scam because the probability of sufficiently pissing off a cop such that something less than pleasant happens to you are so incredibly high that you only have to do this a few times before you win, win, win!

It does not surprise me in the least that dealing with the potentially lethally violent scum of the earth on a daily basis shapes the personalities of cops, both the good ones and the bad ones, no matter who they're dealing with at any particular moment. This is why one of the earliest and most basic life lessons is DON'T FUCK WITH THE COPS OR YOU'LL WISH YOU HADN'T. Yes, this includes smarting off and being a general pain in the ass. Would you shoot off your mouth at a guy with a gun who wasn't wearing a police uniform? See ya at the coroners office, you conscientiously objecting freedom fighter!

I'd like to see him try his act in Mexico.

Thank you for this wonderful interlude. Anything that I can do, my friend, I am there for you.
Interestingly, in my younger days, my mother and her best friend played round after round of Canasta. They taught me and my sisters to play and we would sit there and pound out the cards. Mom and Tina were drinking Maker's Mark and coke and yakking a way. Great times at Pine St.

It sounds like she was one very cool, and patient, lady. I just wish you did this kind of writing more often. Why must you tease us so? You are at your absolute natural best when you are in this mode of reflection. I see 300 pages of can't-put-it-down potential here, and this is certainly not the first time. The post regarding your father was equally striking. Let it never be said that you never left us wanting for more!

I will never forget Thurm- his sweaty brow, his unclean eyewear pregnant with deceit, and of course his desperate cigarette. There is so much about him that's funny, but my favorite tick is his futile takes directly at the camera.

If we don't have an effective means of consistently, effectively detecting voter fraud currently in place, and it doesn't appear that we do, then how can we be so perfectly certain that we don't have a voter fraud problem? It's like insisting that there are no stars in the sky because you never looked.

I have no idea if we have a voter fraud problem. There's no reliable data on which to base a claim either way. Saying "we've never caught anybody, therefore there exists no problem" gives me a headache in my eye.

The original music video for that song is one of the great WTF metal moments of all time. I recall reading somewhere that the band was both mortified and thoroughly pissed when they finally saw it. It's now apparently just one of those things that nobody talks about in the hopes that one day it will simply disappear forever.

Don't feel bad, Chet, about missing the Texas history in middle school; I know more about Texas history than the majority of my students, and I'm no more Texian than you. For example, a shocking number of my students (white, black, brown, and whatever) are of the impression that Cinco de Mayo is a Texas holiday celebrating Mexico. Not exactly sure how that works, but they keep passing the TAKS social studies test with flying colors.

Seriously. I haven't bought a computer with a floppy drive in a decade or more, so the drives have all aged out.

Actually, the last one I had with a floppy was an IBM Thinkpad. I've never bought a Mac with one. Come to think of it, the floppy for that IBM might be in the garage, but it's a false lead, since it won't plug into anything but the IBM it came with. It's not like it was USB.

I am not really an Adele aficionado, but the chorus from her song "Rolling in the Deep" has proven to be particularly difficult to dislodge from my head. The thing is: when I get to the end of the part of her song I actually know, I hear that guitar fill from "Gimme Shelter." I wish I actually possessed the skill to make a mash-up of the two songs. I think they would blend pretty well.

Turns out it is a joke. Steve is generally a smarter guy than that. I was saddened to learn of this legislation without more. The problem is, he needs serious messaging help to get his point across. This is what he told the Mississippi Business Journal about why he filed the bill, according to its staff writer, Clay Chandler:

"It’s right in line with all the other bullsh** going on now in the Legislature,” Holland said. “And you can quote me on that in capital letters if you want to. Cutting education, cutting healthcare, going after immigrants, all the things the Rebublican majority seems interested in, that don’t do anything to enhance the quality of life and the economic foundation of the average Mississippian. It’s a spamelot bill. I thought it made about as much sense as some of the other stuff coming through here. We’ll see what happens.”

Whole piece is here:

I haven't read these, but my wife Sally, her brother Jamie, and his roommate John (the latter two are part of my weekly D&D circle, natch) love them. Sally enjoyed the last one, but John and Jamie didn't. Might have to try these out while I'm on the road this spring, the early ones at least. It's good to have a male character in this popular "urban fantasy" genre (which is a stupid name, but no one has really known what to call it). I've read a few authors in this genre, a Laurel Hamilton here and a Kim Harrison there, mostly cause I was a huge Buffy fan but also 'cause Sally loves the genre. (But then she can read five books a week, both high and low brow.) The thing that struck me about "urban fantasy" is not that the protagonists are mostly female, even though they are, but that EVERY SINGLE BOOK in the genre is written in first person, or at least every one I have seen.

Sally adds that you might want to check out Codex Alera after all, despite your misgivings. It's more traditional high fantasy yes, but Sally, Jamie, and John all love it, and Sally usually is not a high fantasy fan. The quality among those books seems, according to them, to be generally higher than in Dresden. Plus they're cheapo paperbacks (of course, you may be reading all your books via iPad now).

I haven’t read these, but my wife Sally, her brother Jamie, and his roommate John (the latter two are part of my weekly D&D circle, natch) love them. Sally enjoyed the last one, but John and Jamie didn’t. Might have to try these out while I’m on the road this spring, the early ones at least. It’s good to have a male character in this popular “urban fantasy” genre (which is a stupid name, but no one has really known what to call it). I’ve read a few authors in this genre, a Laurel Hamilton here and a Kim Harrison there, mostly cause I was a huge Buffy fan but also ’cause Sally loves the genre. (But then she can read five books a week, both high and low brow.) The thing that struck me about “urban fantasy” is not that the protagonists are mostly female, even though they are, but that EVERY SINGLE BOOK in the genre is written in first person, or at least every one I have seen.

Sally adds that you might want to check out Codex Alera after all, despite your misgivings. It’s more traditional high fantasy yes, but Sally, Jamie, and John all love it, and Sally usually is not a high fantasy fan. The quality among those books seems, according to them, to be generally higher than in Dresden. Plus they’re cheapo paperbacks (of course, you may be reading all your books via iPad now).
