My grandfather quit the NRA somewhere in the early 90s because he claimed they had become a politically motivated lobbying group. He, too, had been a lifetime member since the end of WWII. When I was kicking around between grad schools trying to figure out what to do with myself, he had encouraged me to seek NRA endorsement for the purpose of training others as a sideline business. “Don’t join the sons-a-bitches, but get their endorsement,” he said. “Looks good on a resume.” Not sure it would still look good on my resume, but my granddaddy said don’t join ’em, so I won’t.
