  1. Perhaps Rep. Wilson suddenly thought he was a backbencher in the House of Commons, and it was Question Time.

  2. Meanwhile, California Assemblyman and family values defender Mike Duvall, R-Orange County, denied he is having or has had any extramarital affair(s) even after a live mic recorded, in excruciating detail, a conversation he had with a colleague during a break in a committee meeting in the California State Capital wherein he described the sexual exploits he has undertaken with an energy lobbiest and another unnamed women. Very classy.

  3. There’s no equivalence between boos (which the GOP also pioneered in that chamber when Clinton spoke) and outright heckling (which is what Wilson did).

As an extra bonus, it’s also demonstrably true that Wilson’s outburst was itself a lie. They just get classier and classier.

Fortunately, this is one time when their douchebaggery is undeniably visible for everyone. Wilson’s opponent has raised $100K since the speech.

  4. Make that $875K for Rob Miller. Unfortunately, and as could easily be predicted, the GOP nutbirds are rewarding Wilson, too. According to the National Committee, he has raised about $700K since his outburst.

  5. And Wilson raised 200k. It is the politics of our time. There is no difference Chet, just your sensitivities.

  6. Bollocks. Screaming an accusation is a long way from crowd noises. The rules of the House and Senate say so. You can’t even get away with what Wilson did in a Parliamentary session.

There is no equivalence between the parties. There is no equivalency of tactics. There is no equivalency of position. One party in this country is in grips of rabid right-wingers hostile to honest inquiry and obsessed to the point of fetish with corporate power and control while somehow convincing the unwashed masses that it stands for “limited government”. It is the GOP who are content to demonize gays in blatant attempts to grab power. For nearly 20 years, the GOP have made it abundantly clear that they will push any lie, use any tactic, and destroy any obstacle to their own power, and never mind the consequences. It’s this POV that gave us a $100M witch hunt into Clinton’s bedroom, and it’s this POV that fuels their ongoing fearmongering about “death panels”.

Voting for a Republican — any Republican, in any race — is an endorsement of these tactics. Joe Wilson is not an exception. Joe Wilson is a mainstream Republican. When the President calls for civility and real discussion, the GOP responded with “You lie!” That should tell you all you need to know.

  7. heckle |ˈhekəl| verb [ trans. ] 1 (often be heckled) interrupt (a public speaker) with derisive or aggressive comments or abuse : he was booed and heckled when he tried to address the demonstrators | [ intrans. ] he is merely heckling from the sidelines.

heckle verb he was heckled by the drunk in the back of the room: jeer, taunt, jibe at, shout down, boo, hiss, harass; informal give someone a hard time. ANTONYMS cheer.

Will you now argue that the Apple dictionary is right wing and that I need find the “correct” definition from Mediamatters?

Your other points can be easily countered by the misbehaving of the Dems wasting money on their own witch hunts, creating false catastrophic science (gee that’s not fear mongering). Don’t look now, but I think your Dems are demonizing gays in the military by not shooting down DADT as well as civil unions in their stance on DOMA. Not that this point you bring up has fuck all to do with this thread. Dems Tactics against Palin were as bad or worse than anything the GOP has ever sunk to. Dems in this country are in the grips of rabid left-wingers hostile to honest inquiry and obsessed to the point of fetish with government power and control while somehow convincing the unwashed masses that it stands for (this is more literal for the hippies by the way, the unwashed part) “hopeful government”. See how easy that was to flip? These parties are soooooo different in their extreme views that they are the same barking carnival.

  8. Then perhaps heckle isn’t a strong enough word, since at no point has any democrat screamed YOU LIE during a presidential speech. You don’t want to see the escalation here because you prefer to be contrarian in the face of all available facts, hence your ongoing dismissal of global warming.

I knew it wouldn’t take long for you to trot that out. You’re like some sort of climatological LaRouchian; in any given political discussion, you will inevitably start in on how it’s a giant conspiracy, and that the whole idea is bullshit. The global scientific community disagrees.

There are no democratic witch hunts. Acting on global warming is not a witch hunt. Pointing out that Palin was and remains manifestly unqualified is not a witch hunt. (Frankly, she was the best gift the GOP could have given the Dems last cycle.)

The Dems are demonizing gays in the military? Jesus, Edgar, what color is the sky in your world?

Your hamhanded attempt to flip my sentence doesn’t even pass the risibility test. What hatemongering faiths is the Democratic party in bed with? What theological documents to Democrats quote in support of policy? Which American citizens do the Democrats seek to marginalize and amend the constitution to strip rights from? Which established science are the Democrats consistently working to quash? Which Democratic administration marginalized career scientists in favor of political appointees? Which Democratic judges insist that innocence is no reason to stay an execution? Which Democratic representatives toasted an impeachment with champagne? And which Democratic president started a war for no good reason, when we already had a perfectly good one to prosecute?

There really is a difference, Edgar. You’re just too busy being a self-satisfied contrarian to see it.
