Having read the Scarry oeuvre ad nauseum for the past five years, I’ve had plenty of time to observe his anti-pig agenda. Not only does he depict them in disturbing acts of cannibalism, but they are invariably the ne’re-do-wells and rubes of his fictional world (cf. Mr. Frumble, Smokey, Sparky, Snozzle, et al.).
My personal favorite appears in “Best Word Book Ever” and shows Mrs. Pig Butcher happily slicing a huge piece of bologna.
That, and the fact that he also draws animals visiting zoos, and working on farms…

So far my boys haven’t noticed the incongruity.
