They’re making H. P. Lovecraft‘s “At The Mountains of Madness” into a film.
Good news: Guillermo del Toro is directing, which sounds like a great fit.
Bad news: James Cameron will produce, which I fear will drastically compromise the whole thing into a rote, by the numbers piece of crap on which they nevertheless spend a fortune.
Shoggoths in 3D? Gah!!!
Hmmmm. I don’t know what to think, Chet. I have developed into a fearsome Lovecraft geek over the years (and I gotta say, though he wasn’t much of a writer, he was much better than most of his contemporary imitators, Robert Bloch excluded), and the movies haven’t been kind to HPL. “Re-Animator” is, of course, the obvious exception. Guess del Toro has to finish his two Hobbit movies first, so I won’t hold my breath. Now go to your iTunes and download “Lovecraft in Brooklyn” by the Mountain Goats, which is a very cool song.

Admit it, you were waiting for someone to say it…
Del Toro has been talking about making this movie for more than a decade. It’s one of his dream projects, along with doing a Frankenstein movie (which, incidentally, I’d shoot you or anyone else in the foot to see that one made). I’m really, REALLY hoping that having the King of the World on board as producer just means that he’ll have the clout to make the movie that he wants to make. Because I really do think James Cameron is smart enough to understand that a VERY good movie will get made if he just stands back and lets Guillermo Del Toro do his thing.
