I haven’t played wow for about a quarter. I miss my friends, but I don’t really miss the game – the new expansion is too structured for me – half the fun of WoW in the past was figuring out what one needed for a quest given little information.
I would say that focusing on questing is not the way to enjoy the game, but to give PA credit, that may have been due to the player’s capabilities. I would posit a combination of quests, trade chat (heh), dungeons, rares, raids, raids, raids and crafting are needed for enjoyment. But to each its own.
It’s definitely a reductive critique; the game is way deeper. But, 8 years on, those depths are pretty well explored too.
